New Delhi: An airline worker managed to catch the man who had snatched his father's phone and wallet after scanning CCTV footage that residents shared with him in
west Delhi. He also called police and handed over the suspected snatcher.
Around 1.30pm on Sept 19, when Mohammad Yunus was returning home to Dabri in Dwarka, two men were walking alongside him at Sitapuri Part-2.
One of them started talking to Yunus. The other snatched his mobile phone and wallet and fled. Before Yunus could react, the man who was talking to him had also fled.
Yunus, shaken by the snatching, told his son Mohammad Akram about the crime. As he was scared, the family did not report the matter to the police at that time.
The next day, Akram and his father went to the spot from where his belongings had been stolen.
Akram started looking for CCTV cameras in the vicinity of the crime spot. He asked people in the neighbourhood who owned CCTV cameras to help him find the footage. The father and son finally found the footage they were looking for in a nearby camera. It showed the two men fleeing. His father identified them as the suspects.
Akram and Yunus then took photos of the two men from the footage on a phone and showed these around the neighbourhood. One resident identified one of the men with brown hair. He said that the suspect lived in a house nearby.
Akram and his father went to the house. Upon entering, the father immediately recognised the suspect. The man, identified later as Rahul, tried to flee the moment he saw Yunus. Akram, however, caught him and demanded that he return his father's phone and wallet, else Akram would call the police.
Initially, Rahul denied having stolen them, but relented when Akram warned that he would call the cops. The suspect retrieved the mobile phone and wallet from a room inside the house and handed these over to Yunus and Akram.
The duo then called the police and handed Rahul over to them. At the station, Akram handed over the recovered mobile phone and purse to the authorities and a case was registered.
