New Delhi: The U-Special service has made a comeback on North Campus, with
Delhi University Students' Union flagging off two buses on Tuesday.
This bus service, tailored specifically for students, was abruptly discontinued in March 2020 due to the initial Covid-19 lockdown in Delhi. Despite the lifting of Covid-related restrictions, the resumption of in-person classes, and the full operation of the city's public transit systems, the U-Special buses had remained out of service until now.
Currently, two U-Special buses are operational, providing transportation for students travelling between various colleges on North Campus and the Vishwavidyalaya Metro Station.
There are plans to expand the fleet by adding a third bus soon.
DUSU president Tushar Dedha highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, "The reinstatement of U-Special buses has been a long-standing demand. Ensuring that Delhi University students have accessible and affordable transportation is our top priority. Today, we have utilised our special fund to be gin the process of reintroducing these buses."
This initiative is designed to offer efficient and cost-free transportation for students. "As we promised in our manifesto, we have launched these buses using a special DUSU fund of Rs 70 lakh. This initiative reflects the ABVP-led DUSU's dedication to fulfilling its commitments," added DUSU Secretary Aprajita.
Many freshers may not be familiar with this essential service, which was originally introduced to ease commuting challenges for those travelling to and from various colleges in North Campus.
Before the widespread availability of Delhi metro, these buses played a crucial role in covering various routes across the city, helping students reach the campus and return home.
But in their new form, they are limited to providing last-mile connectivity.
"It is a good initiative as we will save money, and we will not have to walk to our college. I am unaware that this service existed earlier. My home is in Shastri Nagar and I take the metro to Vishwavidyalaya station. So, it will get easier to reach the college from the station," said Poornima (17), a fresher.
