NEW DELHI: Police delayed seizing the clothes of Sanjay Roy, an accused in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at
RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, for two days despite identifying his role on August 10, according to CBI officials.
Roy, a police volunteer, was arrested after CCTV footage showed him entering the seminar hall of the college at 4:03 am on the day of the incident.
"His role in the commission of crime had already emerged," but Tala Police delayed seizing his clothes and other belongings for two days, which could have provided strong evidence, officials said.
The CBI took over the case on August 14 following a Calcutta High Court order and has since arrested former principal Sandip Ghosh and Tala Police station officer-in-charge Abhijit Mondal. The officials allege both were evasive in their responses.
The officials accused Ghosh and Mondal of 'malafide intention' and said they aimed to 'vitiate the evidence' and 'vital data related to this case.'
The CBI is investigating if there was a criminal conspiracy between Roy, Ghosh and Mondal.
An official said the agency is verifying phone calls to explore "the possibility of criminal conspiracy hatched among main accused and co-accused persons, if any."
The CBI will confront the two with CCTV footage from Tala police station, the crime scene, the medical college, and will examine mobile data from their phones to "unearth the conspiracy/nexus, if any and attempt to hush up the matter," the official said.
Mondal and Ghosh allegedly facilitated a hurried cremation of the trainee doctor's body while the family requested a second autopsy, officials stated. Ghosh was reportedly absent from the crime scene instead of overseeing the situation and ensuring the registration of an FIR.
The investigation also includes allegations against Roy and Mondal from the victim's family and other sources.
The trainee doctor was reportedly raped and murdered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 during her early morning shift. Her body with severe injuries was discovered by a doctor on rounds.
