Kanpur: A new chapter will be etched in the history of Green Park on the morning of September 27 with the commencement of the India vs Bangladesh Test match with chime of a bell.
This will mark the inaugural instance of a ringing bell installed at Green Park, a tradition first introduced at the hallowed Lord's Cricket Ground in England.
In India, Eden Gardens in Kolkata embraced this custom, followed by the Arun Jaitley Stadium (formerly known as Feroz Shah Kotla) in Delhi and the Holkar Stadium in Indore.
Now, the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) has resolved to adopt this cherished tradition at the Green Park stadium.
According to treasurer of the host UPCA Prem Manohar Gupta, the association has acquired an 11-kilogram brass bell and commissioned the fabrication of a bespoke stand to house it at a suitable location within the stadium. On Friday, the bell will be rung for the first time by a distinguished guest to mark the commencement of the match. Gupta said that the bell will resonate again for the next international match.
The Green Park has played host to 23 Test matches, 15 One Day Internationals, and a solitary T20 International. This will be the 24th Test match to be held here.
