Kanpur: The body of a 16-year-old girl, missing since Sunday, was found hanging in an orchard on Tuesday morning in the Hasanganj Kotwali police area of Unnao.
The body of the missing teenage girl was found suspended from a scarf in a mango orchard, approximately three kilometres from her village in Shahpur Tonda, within the jurisdiction of Hasanganj Kotwali.
Passersby alerted the police, and an investigation followed.
The family believes that someone killed the girl and hung her body in the orchard. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
Shikha Maurya, from Gaura Katherwa village in Ajgain Kotwali, had been living with her brother-in-law, Munnilal Maurya, in Munna Khera village, under the Auras police station, since the death of her parents two years ago.
On Sunday morning, she suddenly disappeared. The family searched extensively but could not locate her, prompting them to file a missing person's report on Monday. Tuesday morning, while the police and family were still searching, her body was discovered hanging by a scarf in a mango orchard owned by Jayaram.
Inspector Chandrakant Mishra confirmed that the body has been sent for an autopsy, and Auras police are probing the case.
"We are awaiting autopsy report to ascertain the actual cause of death of the teenager," Mishra said.
