Nagpur: Despite strictures against Tehsil police by the high court while transferring the Ram Jhula accident case to state criminal investigation department (CID), cops from the same police station did not seem to have learnt any lesson.
In the latest Audi Q8 hit-and-run case at Ramdaspeth on Sunday midnight, Tehsil police allowed the car to be shifted to a garage from Timki near Mominpura, instead of handing it over to their Sitabuldi counterparts, where the case was being probed.
The shocking lapse has drawn severe criticism against police for shielding state BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule's son Sanket and his friends, who were in the AudiQ8 that damaged multiple vehicles at Ramdaspeth and injured two scooterists in a pile-up. Sanket is the owner of the car.
The video of the car being towed to the garage was shared on the X handle by Sena UBT leader Sushma Andhare, following which city police had to bring the car without a registration number plate, back to Sitabuldi police station. Andhare is now demanding that police be booked for tampering with evidence.
In Ram Jhula case too, Tehsil police returned the Maloo family-owned Black Merc car even when the chargesheet was pending and hearing was underway in courts. The car, which was being driven by Ritika Maloo, was taken to a garage from where it was brought back to Tehsil police station after the media and victim's kin raised objections. Without any court order, the car was being released.
Maloo’s Merc had hit the scooter of Mohd Atif and Mohd Hussain Mustafa on February 25, killing both. The high court had questioned the Tehsil police’s move during the hearing and mentioned the glitch in the order. No action was initiated against any officials of Tehsil police station by top cop Ravinder Singal.
