Microsoft has said that its Microsoft 365 suite of productive software is now recovering after it went down for thousands of users on Thursday evening (September 12). According to a report, the cloud-based productivity software suite includes Word, Excel and Teams, among other widely used tools.
“We can confirm the issue impacting connectivity to Microsoft services is now mitigated.
We've monitored our systems and confirmed that impact has been remediated,” Microsoft said in a post on X.
What caused the outage
According to the company, a change within a third-party internet service provider's (ISP) "managed-environment" resulted in an impact.
“We've confirmed that a change within a third-party ISP's managed-environment resulted in impact. The ISP has reverted the change and we're now seeing signs of recovery,” the company said in a separate post.
According to outage tracking website Downdetector.com, more than 18,000 reports of issues with Microsoft 365 were registered. In India, reports about issues with Microsoft 365 peaked at around 6.45 pm and at the time of writing, no incidents have been reported.
Moreover, news agency Reuters cited Downdetector as saying that there were more than 90,000 user reports within the US for Microsoft 365, Azure, Teams, Xbox, Bing, Microsoft Store and other services. It peaked at more than 23,000 earlier in the day.
The outage comes nearly two months after a faulty software update from cybersecurity services provider CrowdStrike ‘crashed’ nearly 8.5 million Windows devices globally. This crippled operations across industries – ranging from airlines and banks to healthcare.
