NEW DELHI: Former Indian hockey goalkeeper
PR Sreejesh has been nominated for the FIH Men's Goalkeeper of the Year Award 2024. His nomination comes in recognition of his performance at the Paris Olympics, where his efforts helped India secure a bronze medal.
Sreejesh played over 300 matches for India, participating in four Olympic Games: London 2012, Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020, and Paris 2024.
Sreejesh, who retired after an 18-year career, made crucial saves during the tournament, including in a key match against Great Britain.
In that quarterfinal match, India played with 10 men after
Amit Rohidas was shown a red card. Sreejesh's saves in the penalty shootout were vital in securing a 4-2 win, allowing India to progress to the semifinals.
Reflecting on his nomination, Sreejesh said, "Every save I made in that tournament was not just about me; it was about the entire team and our country's support."
Known as the "Great Wall of Indian Hockey," Sreejesh has received multiple awards throughout his career, including the FIH Goalkeeper of the Year awards in 2021 and 2022, the Arjuna Award, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, and the World Games Athlete of the Year.
"This nomination isn't just mine; it's for every individual who has supported me and Indian hockey over the years," Sreejesh stated. "I hope my career inspires future generations to chase their dreams on the hockey field."
