Ravichandran Ashwin claimed six wickets after a first-innings century with the bat to inspire India to a 280-run thrashing of Bangladesh in the first Test on Sunday.
The tourists, who began day four in an overcast Chennai on 158-4 and chasing 515 for victory, were bowled out for 234 in the first session with skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto scoring 82.
Hometown hero Ashwin struck first to end a stubborn overnight stand by getting Shakib Al Hasan caught at short-leg for 25.
India's massive 280-run win over Bangladesh in the first Test of the series in Chennai marks a rousing start to the team's run in the home stretch of the World Test Championship (WTC). Rohit Sharma & Co consolidated their position as the top team in the WTC leaderboard with their seventh win in 10 Tests so far in the 2023-25 cycle that concludes with the final next year, beginning June 11 at Lord's.
Ravichandran Ashwin followed up his century (113) in the first innings with a six-wicket haul (6 for 88) on the fourth day of the match, which turned out to be the concluding day, as Bangladesh folded up for 234 in their second innings, while chasing a mammoth 515 to win.
The game saw a special century besides hundreds by Ashwin and Shubman Gill (119 not out), when Rishabh Pant, playing his first Test since the horrific car accident in December 2022, scored his sixth Test century (109).
Incidentally, it made Pant the joint leader, alongside the legendary MS Dhoni, in the list of Indian wicketkeepers with most Test centuries.

India retain same squad for 2nd Test against Bangladesh
The Men's Selection Committee has retained the same squad for the second Test of the Test series against Bangladesh.
The second Test will be played in Kanpur from 27th September.
India’s squad for the 2nd Test against Bangladesh:
Rohit Sharma (C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), R Ashwin, R Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Akash Deep, Jasprit Bumrah, Yash Dayal
Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin's mastery over his craft, underlined by a six-wicket haul, proved too immense for Bangladesh as India cantered to a massive 280-run victory in the first Test with five sessions to spare on Sunday.
Maintaining a clean slate against the Asian neighbours, India now lead the two-match series 1-0.
Starting from their overnight 158 for four, Bangladesh were bundled out for 234 in their second innings as Ashwin scythed through their line-up (6/88).
Ravindra Jadeja supported him with a three-wicket haul (3/58).
Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto waged a lone battle for the visitors with a sparkling 82 (127b, 8x4, 3x6), but there was hardly any meaningful support for him from his colleagues.
The day, however, began on a bright note for the Bangladeshis with Shanto and Shakib Al-Hasan (25) extending their fifth-wicket stand to 48 runs, resisting the Indian bowlers in the first hour.

India vs Bangladesh Live Score: 'I am probably enjoying my play because what I am doing' - Ashwin
(Century and fifer) Every time I play in Chennai, it's an amazing feeling for me. I have watched a lot of Test cricket and international cricket sitting in those stands. I am probably enjoying my play because what I am doing. It was an opportunity to fight and dig in deep. I kept it simple, have to thank Jadeja who helped me. Quite a special knock, didn't sink in till day two. I make a living by bowling. Bowling comes first. Batting is something that comes naturally.

India vs Bangladesh Live Score: 'You are never out of cricket' - Rohit Sharma
It was a great result looking at what lies ahead for us. We are playing after a long time, but you are never out of cricket. We came here a week before, we wanted the result we wanted. (Pant's hundred) He's been through some really tough times. The way he has managed himself was superb to watch. He came back in the IPL, followed by a successful World Cup and this is a format he loves the most. It was about giving him the game time. Credit to him, he had an impact straightaway.
No matter what the conditions are, we want to build the team around that. In the last few years, wherever we have played, we have managed to have that in the armoury. You have to give credit to the guys, they want to put their hand up. The red soil pitch always has something to offer. You need to have a little bit of patience as well. This was a pitch where we had to show a lot of patience. We were patient enough with the bat and with the ball as well to put them under pressure.
Rohit Sharma - India captain
India vs Bangladesh Live Score: 'India batted really well' - Shanto
The positive thing is the way Hasan, Taskin and Nahid Rana bowled in the first innings. They (India) batted really well. Seaming option - everyone contributed. We have bowled well with the new ball but we have to continue that. As a batter, I always try to contribute. I enjoy my batting. Just try to bat as long as possible without thinking about the result, that's what we wanted to do.

India vs Bangladesh Live Score: 'I love playing in Chennai': Rishabh Pant
Definition a lot special, firstly I love playing in Chennai and secondly after injury I was looking to play all three formats, this was my first match in this format and hopefully I did better. Definitely it was emotional, I was looking to score runs in each and every game. Coming back to Test cricket where I belong the most, being on the field gives me pleasure more than anything else.
I don't know what people say outside, I tried to read the situation in my own way, when you are 30-3 you need to stitch a partnership and that's what I did with Gill. To do it with a guy who I have a great relationship with is special.

Taskin Ahmed's aggressive approach backfires as he is dismissed by Ashwin. The resulting top edge sends the ball soaring high into the air, eventually landing in the safe hands of Mohammed Siraj, who positions himself well at mid-on to take a straightforward catch.

India vs Bangladesh Live Score: PITCH REPORT
Pitch Report | Murali Kartik and Dinesh Karthik
"There is enough and more to keep the spinners interested. I am standing at the end which closer to the pavilion from where the batters were facing Ravichandran Ashwin - there is enough and more turn for the spinners from the straight. Keeps everyone interested, the slip, the wicketkeeper. This pitch is crumbling, there's enough happening for the spinners. And why it happens on a red soil pitch is the fact that it is powdery. This powdery nature tells you how hard the pitch is and hence when it disintegrates, it becomes that much more for the spinners to work with. Both ends of the pitch have very different rough. This is a lot better for Ashwin to bowl at to a right-hander. And as we move to the other side, we'll notice that the hardness of the pitch remains consistent but as you get closer to where the batters are, that's when a left-arm spinner like Ravindra Jadeja would enjoy bowling at. There is enough and more rough."
When Rishabh Pant called his coach Devender Sharma before his anticipated Test return, the seasoned player received one bit of advice: "Head down kar ke khelnaa." It was a reminder to respect the good balls.
With a remarkable century in his comeback Test, Pant has proved once again why he's crucial to the traditional format.
"Obviously I am very happy for Rishabh. In fact, he could have got a hundred in the first innings also and I was a bit sad that he didn't get that," Devender, who has guided Pant since his early days at the Sonnet Club, told PTI after the third day's play.
"But today he was flawless. This hundred is an important innings for him as it's his first international ton since comeback."
Stats don't necessarily reveal the entire story, but they do leave an indicator. So, when Rishabh Pant matches MS Dhoni's six-Test-centuries feat — achieved over 90 Tests — in just 34 games, it's a very special achievement indeed.
The Pant story is all the more special because of the cruel turn that life had taken on a wintry morning in 2022. Lucky to be alive after a car accident, not too many gave him a chance to play top-flight cricket again, let alone play Tests.
Pant's comeback story is well documented. His return in the last IPL was a tale of determination while his role as a No. 3 batter on the most difficult pitches of the T20 World Cup spoke volumes of his grit.
There were still doubts whether his body would be able to take the rigours of five-day cricket, but after Saturday, all those speculations have been put to rest. The comfort with which he batted against the Bangladesh bowlers showed that the cobwebs in the mind have been taken care of.
India's two centurions from day three of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai, Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill, not just entertained the crowd at the MA Chidambaram Stadium but also had a good time on the crease teasing each other, besides pummeling the bowlers.
In one such incident shared by Shubman Gill after the close of play on Saturday, whenever either of them hit a boundary, Pant would hit Gill's bat hard with his.
While that's normal for a batsman to do as a way of congratulating his partner in the middle, Gill had his reasons to ask Pant to stop doing it.

India vs Bangladesh Live Score: Rishabh Pant levels MS Dhoni's record
Rishabh Pant, the Indian wicketkeeper-batsman, reached a significant milestone during the third day of the first Test match against Bangladesh in Chennai on Saturday. Following his impressive performance in the second innings of the Duleep Trophy opener for India B, Pant continued his excellent form.
After a promising start in the first innings, scoring 39 runs, Pant worked diligently to achieve his sixth Test century, causing the crowd and the Indian team to erupt in celebration. With this achievement, Pant has equaled the record held by India's iconic captain, MS Dhoni, for the most centuries scored by a designated wicketkeeper in Test cricket for India.
Dhoni, who played Test cricket from 2005 to 2014, also scored six centuries in his career. Wriddhiman Saha follows them with three Test hundreds in 54 innings.
Throughout his time at the crease, Pant relied heavily on his aggressive stroke play to accumulate runs on the placid surface of the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Alongside Shubman Gill, the Indian pair controlled the game at their will, forming a crucial 167-run partnership that set the stage for the hosts to take a commanding position in the match.
Pant's innings showcased a mix of front-foot and back-foot play. When facing spinners, he primarily employed his back-foot technique, allowing himself time to pick the gaps and score runs effectively.
India vs Bangladesh Live Score: Counter-attack by Bangladesh
Faced with an onerous task in their second innings, Bangladesh openers Zakir Hasan (33) and Shadman Islam (35) decided to counter-attack in their 62-run stand.
Yashasvi Jaiswal took a stunning left-handed catch in the slips to remove Zakir before Ashwin, who smashed a match-defining century in the first innings, produced a three-wicket burst.
Gill and KL Rahul took diving catches to dismiss Shadman and Mushfiqur Rahim respectively, while Mominul Haque lost his middle stump to the wily off-spinner.
While wickets tumbled around him, Shanto played his natural aggressive game bringing up his fifty with his third six.
India vs Bangladesh Live Score: Super Gill and comeback man Pant
Earlier, Shubman Gill struck an unbeaten 119 and Rishabh Pant (109) smashed a hundred in his comeback Test before India declared their second innings on 287-4.
The hosts were already in the ascendancy since routing Bangladesh for 149 in their first innings and claiming a lead of 227 at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.
Gill signalled their positive intent when the elegant right-hander clobbered off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz for two sixes in an over to reach his fifty.
Pant took a more conventional approach, a single off the spinner, to bring up his half-century in his first Test since a horrific car accident in late 2022.
Bangladesh squandered a chance to break the stand when Shanto dropped Pant on 72.
Rubbing salt into the wound, Pant hit Shakib for back-to-back fours in the left-arm spinner's next over and beat Gill to the 100 mark.
Pant smashed 13 fours and four sixes in his sixth Test hundred before giving a return catch to Mehidy.
Gill, whose fifth Test hundred included 10 fours and four sixes, could not be dislodged though.
India vs Bangladesh Live Score: Eyes on Shanto and Shakib
Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (51) and all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan (five) were in the middle when bad light forced early stumps with Bangladesh still needing a hefty 357 runs to win.
India vs Bangladesh Live Score: India set Bangladesh a mammoth victory target
India set Bangladesh a mammoth victory target of 515 and then reduced them to 158-4 to close in on a comprehensive victory on day three of the opening Test between the neighbouring countries on Saturday.
Bangladesh began well but some smart catching by the Indians and three wickets for home hero Ravichandran Ashwin rattled the tourists.
Hello and welcome to the Live coverage from Day 1 of the first Test between India and Bangladesh in Chennai.
