Bareilly: A court in Rampur sentenced a man to 20 years in prison and fined him Rs 1 lakh for raping a 6-year-old girl. The judgment, delivered within 26 days on Saturday, marks the first sentence under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) law in the district.
On Aug 8 when
Ashwini Kumar, 32, who lived in the labour colony of a village factory, took a co-worker's 6-year-old daughter to his quarters and raped her.
The severely injured girl was hospitalised in critical condition. The police filed a report the same day, and Kumar was arrested near the factory shortly afterwards.
The charge sheet was submitted to the court on Aug 19, and the court took cognisance of the case on Aug 21. After framing charges on Aug 27, Additional district judge (Pocso) Ramgopal Singh delivered his verdict after just 12 hearings, based on evidence presented by the prosecution.
Additional SP Atul Kumar Srivastava said, "Ashwini, a resident of Hardoi district employed in Rampur, was charged under section 65-2 (rape on a woman below 16 years of age) of BNS and the
Pocso Act. The case was included in ‘Mission Conviction' and a chargesheet was filed by us in 11 days. Additional district govt counsel Sumit Sharma represented the state, ensuring a speedy trial."
