Bhubaneswar: Adhering to the
Supreme Court ruling on Monday that mere viewing of child pornographic material on the internet and its possession is also an offence under Pocso and IT Acts, the state govt has decided to establish a dedicated task force to investigate and prosecute such cases.
“This landmark decision sends a resounding message that the state will not tolerate any form of child sexual exploitation.
It reinforces the responsibility of every citizen to protect our children, ensuring their safety and well-being,” the govt stated, while announcing the decision to implement the task force.
The statement further said the ruling firmly asserts that ignorance of law will no longer serve as a defence for those who exploit or endanger minors.
“Under the law, engaging with child pornography whether through viewing or downloading is a grave crime that must be fully prosecuted,” it said.
State govt also urged people to report any suspicious activity to the authorities to safeguard vulnerable children.
“The state expresses its gratitude to the Supreme Court for its decisive action and leadership in protecting the rights and dignity of our children,” the statement read.
It further said that in accordance with the Supreme Court’s recommendations, the state will invest in comprehensive support services for victims of child abuse, providing them with essential care and resources required for their recovery.
“The state reaffirms its unwavering commitment to upholding stringent legal frameworks aimed at eradicating child sexual exploitation in all its forms. The state will enhance coordination with law enforcement agencies to effectively combat the dissemination and consumption of child pornography,” the statement read.
