Chandigarh: Almost a month after Punjab cadre IAS officer Anindita Mitra was relieved from the Chandigarh administration, the appointments committee of the cabinet (ACC) under the department of personnel and training, Government of India, on Saturday approved 3-month extension to the officer, who served as commissioner of Chandigarh municipal corporation during her 3-year deputation period in UT.
The UT administration had written to the Centre to extend Mitra’s tenure for three months, but when no communication was received in the matter, she was relieved from her post on Aug 22.
Importantly, this is happening for the first time that the ACC has given extension to an IAS officer after she was relieved from the UT administration.
Sources in the Chandigarh administration said the entire goof-up is because of lack of communication.
The UT administration has now approached the ministry of home affairs (MHA), informing them about every development related to relieving of Mitra. Sources said chances of Mitra rejoining the Chandigarh administration seems bleak.
“We have spoken to the UT section of the MHA and explained to them about the current situation. We have informed them that the IAS officer who has been given extension has already been relieved from the Chandigarh administration, and that she has joined her parent state too. Now, the MHA will minutely look into the entire matter before issuing any fresh order,” a senior official with knowledge of the matter said.
The official said Mitra has joined her parent cadre of Punjab and the state government has given her postings too. Subsequently, she has joined her new office.
“Though, the central government is supreme authority in cases related to IAS officers, this is first-of-its-kind case in Chandigarh where the officer was given extension after she was relieved from the UT administration. Now that she has joined her parent state and got posting too, the stand of the state government will be crucial too,” officials said.
