Chandigarh: AAP national convener Arvind
Kejriwal on Tuesday accused the BJP-led central govt of arresting him to portray him as a “chor” (thief), but claimed that even his “fiercest enemy” knew he was not corrupt.
The former Delhi chief minister held a roadshow in the Rania assembly constituency of
Haryana’s Sirsa district in support of Aam Aadmi Party nominee Harpinder Singh for the Oct 5 assembly elections.
Kejriwal quit as Delhi’s CM after being released from Tihar jail last week once the Supreme Court had granted him bail in the excise policy case. AAP’s Atishi replaced him.
Addressing the gathering, Kejriwal said he had spent five-months-and-a-half in jail “for the fault of serving Delhi for 10 years and giving good govt schools to the children of its poor”.
He said: “Earlier, Delhi had power cuts of 7 to 8 hours a day, but now it gets round-the-clock electricity. My fault is that I made it free in Delhi and Punjab and started a free ‘tirath yatra’ for the elderly. No corrupt person could do the many works that were carried out in Delhi and Punjab. My govt made electricity free in Delhi at a cost of Rs 3,000 crore. A ‘chor’ would have pocketed that money and not bothered to improve schools.”
He claimed that electricity was expensive in every BJP-run state, including Haryana. He said: “So, I ask you who is a ‘chor’ — the one who makes electricity free or the one who makes it expensive? Why did they put me in jail? I am honest. Meri imandari pe chot karna chahte hain (They want to tarnish my honest image). They want to label me a thief because I was jailed for five months, but as I walked out of jail, nobody, not even my fiercest enemy, sees me as ‘chor’. To break my spirit in jail, they stopped my medicines. I am diabetic for 10 years, but they stopped my insulin. I don’t know what they wanted to do with me.” PTI
