AIADMK women’s wing demands resignation of DMK govt
Chennai: AIADMK women's wing on Tuesday held a protest against DMK govt, accusing it of failing to curb "rising crimes" against women and "anti-social activities" in the state. The demonstrators, dressed in black sarees, demanded resignation of DMK govt.
Leading the protest, former minister B Valarmathi stated that AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami had consistently raised concerns about drug-related sexual assaults in various forums, including the assembly and public rallies.
"But the chief minister did not act. Women must teach him a lesson... In Tamil Nadu, a woman is raped every two hours," she claimed.
The protest in Valluvar Kottam, Chennai, saw Valarmathi citing multiple incidents of sexual assaults against young girls in areas such as Trichy, Dindigul, Chennai, Tirupathur, Krishnagiri, and Mettupalayam.
Former minister Gokula Indira criticised govt's handling of law and order, pointing to drug raids in educational institutions.
"It is an incompetent govt that is governing the state where even an 80-year-old woman is not safe," she alleged. Protesters raised slogans accusing the state of becoming a hub for drugs and criticised DMK party members for alleged links with drug mafia. They said the administration failed to address crimes against women and drug-related issues even as lives of women were destroyed.
AIADMK members vowed to unseat DMK govt. "Tamil Nadu, which ranked first in several sectors under the AIADMK regime, is a frontrunner in prevalence of drugs and sexual assaults," they said, pledging to reinstate AIADMK govt led by Palaniswami to ensure safety of women and maintain law and order. The party accused DMK of making false poll promises to return to power and stalling various welfare schemes of AIADMK.
