Another case against former minister Vaithilingam, son
Chennai: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption has filed another corruption case against former AIADMK minister R Vaithilingam, naming his elder son V Prabu as an accused.
As per the case filed by the Tamil Nadu govt's anti-corruption agency's Thanjavur detachment on Sept 19, the assets of the former minister and his son were found disproportionate to their know sources of income by 1,057.85% during the check period from May 2011 to April 2016, when Vaithilingam was minister for housing and CMDA under the AIADMK govt.

The DVAC's first case against Vaithilingam involves the alleged payment of 27.9 crore by private firm Shriram Properties into the account of Muthammal Estates, a shell company set up by his sons, in exchange for securing a CMDA plan permit for the firm. This case was also registered on Sept 19.
To support its investigation, the DVAC said Vaithilingam had assets valued at 36.58 lakh in the names of his wife and elder son at the start of the check period in May 2011. These assets included house sites, agricultural land, gold jewellery, motor vehicles, fixed deposits and balance in bank accounts. On March 31, 2016, these assets rose to 34.28 crore, DVAC said. The income derived by Vaithilingam, his wife and son was 3.06 crore, while expenses were 1.62 crore. Assets acquired were worth 32.92 crore during the period and likely savings were 1.44 crore.
Based on this, the agency calculated the quantum of disproportionate assets at 32.47 crore and registered a corruption case against the two
