Chennai: Dravidar Kazhagam (DK) president K Veeramani on Tuesday said "our opponents are trying to destroy our identity and culture".
Speaking at a seminar to commemorate the centenary year of the discovery of the Indus Valley Civilization (IVC), Veeramani said, "Our opponents are trying to bring in the horse (symbol of Vedic culture) instead of the bull (symbol of IVC).
Our enemies are trying to destroy our identity and culture. We need to protect history and culture because cultural invasion is more dangerous than political invasion."
Veeramani said in the last 15 years, there have been "serious attempts" to rewrite Indian history. "Attempts were made to portray epics and myths as history. They are trying to restrict philosophy within religious ideas. They are trying to replace science with pseudo-science," Veeramani said.
ASI director Amarnath Ramakrishnan said efforts were being made to change the nature of IVC. "They (opponents) are trying to convert ASI into the Sindhu-Saraswati civilization. They said that there were horses in IVC, but we proved that there were no horses. Now, they have started saying that homagundam (a vessel to perform prayers by igniting fire) has been found, but it is only a stove. We need to continue the research to prevent them from trying to change the nature of the civilization," Ramakrishnan said.
Recalling the efforts of British archaeologist Sir John Marshall, who unearthed IVC in 1924, Ramakrishnan said, "If not for Marshall, we would not have been reading about IVC and we would not have had IVC in books."
