Chennai: Following a Madras high court directive, Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) have warned of action against unauthorised ‘no parking' signs, barricades, and other obstructions being placed on public roads by residential societies and businesses. This illegal occupation of public space has been causing inconvenience to pedestrians and motorists, obstructing the flow of traffic, said an official release.
GCTP stated that no individual, residential society, or commercial entity is permitted to place such signs or barriers on public roads without prior authorisation from the competent authorities.
Under section 116 of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, only govt authorities have the power to install traffic signage.
Police have urged citizens to report vehicles parked in unauthorised locations by calling helplines 103 or 100, warning that fines and penalties will be imposed on offenders. Individuals or entities who have placed unauthorised signs or obstructions are expected to remove them immediately to avoid legal consequences.
The public has also been reminded not to park vehicles in a manner that obstructs others or causes inconvenience.tnn
