Roorkee: A man was killed and 12 individuals, including the village head, were injured after a violent clash erupted between two groups in Aamkhedi village, Haridwar district, over the ownership of a plot of land. The groups attacked each other with sharp weapons and sticks. Police have deployed additional forces in the village to maintain order.
Villagers said the dispute originated over a piece of land that once belonged to one Jogender Singh but was later allotted to the gram panchayat for use as a children's graveyard and an animal cemetery following a land consolidation process.
However, Jogender continued to occupy the land. Adjacent to this plot was land owned by Azad Singh, cousin of the current village head, Ravinder Singh. Azad allegedly sold eucalyptus trees from the disputed plot. When the buyer arrived on Monday, Jogender confronted and chased him away.
Tensions escalated on Tuesday morning when Azad, accompanied by his family and village head Ravinder, attempted to take possession of the land. Jogender and his brothers reportedly attacked the group with axes and sticks. During the clash, Azad, 45, was struck on the head with an axe and died on the spot.
"The clash lasted only about four minutes, but the violence was severe," said former village head Jasvir Singh. Among the injured were Shivaji alias Seva Ram (60), Ravinder (35), and Jogender (50), all of whom sustained critical injuries.
SSP Pramendra Singh Dobal said, "The situation in the village is under control, and additional forces have been deployed to prevent further violence. The investigation is ongoing."
