Dehradun: The women's wing of the Uttarakhand Congress staged a protest march on Saturday, starting from the party office on Rajpur Road and heading towards the chief minister's residence, to voice their opposition to rising crimes against women in the state. Led by Uttarakhand Women Congress chief Jyoti Rautela, the protest was stopped by police at Hathibadkala, preventing the demonstrators from reaching the CM's residence.
Rautela said the party had demanded for a CBI investigation into the Rishikesh Resort murder case, and accused
BJP of attempting to shield those involved in the crime. "The Congress firmly believes that only a CBI inquiry can ensure a fair and impartial investigation," she said, adding that the BJP govt failed to take adequate measures to bring the culprits to justice and is "instead trying to protect them."
State Congress chief Karan Mahara and former chief minister Harish Rawat also attended the protest to extend their support. Mahara criticising the BJP govt, said that the law-and-order situation in Uttarakhand has hit an all-time low under them, with the govt failing to act decisively against criminals.
Congress members accused the state govt of neglecting the safety and security of women, citing an alarming increase in violence against women. They demanded stronger measures to curb such incidents and urged the government to improve the overall law and order situation in the state.
Police, however, stopped the march before it could reach the CM's residence, citing security reasons. The protesters were not allowed to proceed further and were asked to disperse peacefully.
