New Delhi: The chief election officer for DUSU elections issued a notice to candidates on Tuesday regarding the defacement of public and private walls during the ongoing campaigns.
The notice issued by chief election officer
Satyapal Singh reads, "It has been observed that you have resorted to graffiti, posters, banners, hoardings, printed materials etc. to promote your candidature.
This is not only detrimental to the cleanliness and aesthetics of the university and surrounding areas but also in contravention to the Lyngdoh committee recommendations and NGT orders."
It adds, "Non-compliance will lead to disqualification from the election process, as well as legal action. You are henceforth directed to take off/remove any such campaign material latest by 5pm, Sept 24 from the University of Delhi premises, failing which your candidature will be cancelled."
In the lead-up to the elections scheduled for Friday, North Campus was filled with numerous posters, banners and hoardings. Despite the university administration designating specific ‘walls of democracy' for campaign use, some candidates and students continued to affix posters to other campus walls. Additionally, pamphlets and small cards were scattered throughout the campus and outside the Vishwavidyalaya Metro station.
By Tuesday evening, some of the posters and hoardings had been removed from the campus. Student organisations maintained that they had not violated any rules. An ABVP member said, "We will adhere to the Lyngdoh recommendations as well as the guidelines set forth by the chief election officer."
An NSUI member said, "After the HC order and the notice from the chief election officer, we have removed all our material from the campus."
