Delhi Police reveals.
Dacoities rose by 23% this year against 2023 and by 46% compared to 2022. Similarly, burglaries have shot up 25.2% compared to last year. The rise is a staggering 60% compared to 2022.
The cases of attempted murders in the city have also seen a jump of 18% this year against 2023, the data shows. All data pertains to the crimes between Jan and Aug.
The city roads aren't also any safer in 2024, with fatalities seeing an uptick. According to the police data, fatal accidents in a year usually see a slight decline compared to the previous year. However, in 2024, they have risen by around 5% compared to 2023 and 2022, the data shows.
Overall, police have registered 1,74,253 crimes under Indian Penal Code and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita this year. The data shows that there have been 308 murders and 1,034 robberies in 2024. Kidnappings for ransom stand at six while extortion cases have reached 144. The data also highlights a concerning trend in the crimes against women and children, with 1,342 cases of rape and under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. However, by overall numbers, rapes have gone down by 4% against 2023.
There have also been 4,316 snatchings, 5,735 burglaries, 12,698 house thefts and 25,140 vehicle thefts. Road safety remains a major concern, with 878 fatal and 2,702 non-fatal accidents.
Heinous crimes have remained almost the same as 2023 with a negligible variation of 2%, officials said. The kidnapping and extortion figures also indicate a similar situation. Crimes like murders have, however, dipped by 9%, robberies by 4.7% and snatchings by 16%, the data claims.
Delhi Police says it has responded by increasing patrols in high-crime areas and launching initiatives to improve road safety and women's security. However, residents demand stricter enforcement and more effective policing to curb the growing crime rate. The data underscores the urgency for a multifaceted approach, with calls for increased police presence, community engagement and stricter legislation to ensure public safety, retired officers said.
The data shows that crimes like kidnapping for ransom almost doubled in Delhi in 2023 compared to 2022 and around 110 vehicles on average were stolen every day last year. According to the data, dacoity cases skyrocketed by 61% with 29 incidents. Overall, recorded crimes witnessed a rise of 8% last year.
