Margao/Vasco: Incessant rain caused a landslide along the Loutolim-Verna bypass on Tuesday morning, disrupting traffic and raising concerns among commuters. A portion of the earth came down on the highway, blocking the road and creating a hazardous situation for motorists. However, no casualties were reported in the incident.
Fire and emergency services personnel restored the road to its normal condition.
A crane and two earth-moving machines were deployed to clear the debris, and the two-lane was partially closed.
It caused inconvenience to the commuters, particularly people travelling for work in the Verna industrial estates and heavy vehicles transporting goods to the industrial units.
Sources within the fire and emergency services have expressed concern over the area’s susceptibility to landslides. They have warned that if the rain continues with the same intensity, there is a high likelihood of further landslides in the area, posing a significant risk to public safety.
In addition to the landslide, heavy showers have also led to waterlogging at various places in
South Goa. The fire brigade was busy throughout the day, responding to numerous incidents of tree felling.
One such incident occurred at Madel, Margao, where a mango tree was uprooted, damaging two motorcycles parked in the area.
