Guwahati: Schools in Guwahati are set to reopen on Wednesday following a decrease in maximum temperature due to rainfall since Monday evening. The education department had previously mandated the closure of all schools in the city until Sept 27 due to extreme heat, with temperatures surpassing 39 degrees Celsius on Monday.
On Tuesday, the Kamrup (Metro) inspector of schools and district elementary education officer declared that the improved weather conditions permitted the reopening of schools, thereby rescinding the earlier closure order.
Nevertheless, the adjusted school timings from 7:30 am to 12:30 pm, as mentioned in the order dated Sept 20, will remain in effect until further notice. “Thus, all Govt/Provincialized/Private schools in Kamrup metro are to continue with normal classes from tomorrow, i.e., from 25th September, 2024," the order stated.
On Tuesday, a significant decrease in maximum temperatures was observed throughout the northeast, with temperatures falling below 35 degrees Celsius in most areas. According to data from the
India Meteorological Department (IMD), light to moderate rain was reported at various locations, with heavy rains over Assam in the past 24 hours. In the northeast, Silchar experienced the highest maximum temperature on Tuesday at 36.6 degrees Celsius, followed by Guwahati at 35.6 degrees Celsius and Dhubri at 34.3 degrees Celsius.
The IMD has predicted more rain across the northeast over the next four days. For Wednesday, the Met office has stated that heavy to very heavy rain is likely at isolated places in Assam. Furthermore, heavy rain is anticipated at isolated locations in Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram on Wednesday.
