Dharwad: Environmentalists, academicians, social workers and others, under the banner of ‘Parisarakkagi Naavu’, staged a demonstration in front of the DC’s office here on Wednesday, urging the government to implement the recommendations of Madhav Gadgil-led experts’ committee report on the Western Ghats. They took out a procession from Kadapa Maidan to the DC’s office and submitted a memorandum addressed to the chief minister.
Dr Sanjiv Kulkarni, Prakash Bhat, Sharada and Gopal Dabade and others said the landslides in Uttara Kannada, Sakaleshpur and Waynad in Kerala have caused irreparable losses to nature and several innocent lives were lost. “This is not nature’s fury, but a man-made disaster,” they rued.
20k ration cards cancelledBelagavi: The Belagavi district administration has cancelled 19,969 ration cards in the past six months. It has also collected a penalty of Rs 1.9 crore from those who had availed priority household ration cards by providing fake documents. Sources said 19,969 ration cards, including 557 Antyodaya Anna Yojana ration card holders and 19,412 priority household ration card holders, had not taken ration from fair-price shops from Nov 2023 to April 2024. All such ration cards were cancelled on July 29. Sources said 45,804 priority household ration cards possessed by govt employees and non-eligible families have been converted into non-priority household ration cards. A penalty of Rs 1,88,75,945 has been collected from ineligible card holders. The authorities also removed the data of 1,421 card holders from the software following the demise of card holders (11,117 Antyodaya Anna Yojana, and 1,421 non-priority households).
Medical camp for senior citizens heldDharwad: On World Senior Citizens’ Day, Karnataka Bank conducted a free medical check-up camp for senior citizens. Bank’s Shivanand Nagar branch manager Kiran Kadam said the camp witnessed a significant turnout, with over 100 senior citizens benefiting from the medical check-up. He said the bank has recently launched a new savings scheme. The new scheme ‘KBL-WISE’ has been tailored specifically for senior citizens, which includes insurance benefits up to Rs 10 lakh.
Belagavi to host National IP Yatra-2024Belagavi: The MSME Intellectual Property Facilitation Centre at KLE Technological University, in collaboration with MSME Development and Facilitation Office, Hubballi, and the District Industries Centre, Belagavi), will host ‘National IP Yatra-2024’ on Friday at KLE’s Dr MS Sheshgiri College of Engineering and Technology here. Under MSME Innovative Scheme by the ministry of MSME, the initiative aims at raising awareness about intellectual property rights among MSMEs, startups, researchers, individuals, and faculty and students. Sachin Sabnis, MD of BFC India Pvt Ltd, will be the chief guest, while Venkatesh Patil, MD of Belgaum Oxygen Pvt Ltd, will be the guest of honour.
