Dharwad: Despite numerous innovations and inventions, farmers in North Karnataka continue to struggle to make the two ends meet. Frequent drought and floods have been playing spoilsport and the worst hit are farmers with small holdings.
In the face of all these challenges, farmers continue hoping that things will improve.
In a bid to facilitate the farmers overcome the hurdles in cultivation and see a rise in their income, the University of Agricultural Sciences holds the Krishi Mela annually where the farmers are exposed to newer innovations and invention and remedial measures.
The 34th edition of the four-day Krishi Mela-2024 will commence on UAS campus on Saturday (Sept 21) and the first day will have seed mela. This year, the focus of the Krishi Mela is ‘Agricultural technologies for management of climate change'.
District minister Santosh Lad will inaugurate the seed mela at 10.30am. Chief minister Siddaramaiah will inaugurate Krishi Mela on Sunday at 10.30am.
At the Mela, over 150 hi-tech, 214 economy, 110 agriculture machinery, 27 tractor and other heavy machineries and 28 food stalls will be there. Prime attractions this year will be cropping systems for climate change management, integrated crop management, biofertilisers and biopesticides, oilseeds, pulses and rabi crops technologies.
In addition, there will be rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge, natural and organic farming, soil conservation, hi-tech horticulture, fruits and flowers show, World of Insects, improved farm implements and Kisan Drones. Focus has also been laid on agroforestry and fodder crops technologies, animal husbandry and livestock exhibition, value addition and secondary agriculture and community science technologies.
