Kochi: Metro cities like Kochi face significant challenges such as the spread of contagious diseases and govt is working to strengthen the public health system to tackle them, said health minister Veena George.
The minister was in Kochi to inaugurate various projects on Friday. As part of state govt's 100-day action programme, George inaugurated four health projects at Malippuram in Vypeen.
"The second Kerala model in the health sector prioritizes combating lifestyle diseases. The sub-centres have now been transformed into people's health centres. These centres provide facilities for various tests and exercises. They can also be utilized for health awareness programmes," said George.
"Kerala's health sector is the best in the country as a result of decades of effort. The United Nations recommended neonatal mortality rate at six per thousand by 2030, but Kerala achieved this target in 2021 itself. This success is due to collective efforts. The strength of Kerala's health sector lies in its healthcare workers," she added.
The construction of Cochin Cancer Centre building has been completed, with an allocation of Rs 384 cr through KIIFB, she said. "The centre will be fully operational in a few months. A critical care centre will be established in Kalamassery to handle any type of emergency situation in the industrial city. Special funds will be allocated for this purpose. The state also offers robotic treatment for cancer," she added.
She inaugurated a new building for Malippuram people's health centre, constructed at a cost of Rs 67 lakh. She also inaugurated several projects online, including the upgrade of Munambam family health centre to a block family health centre, flood reconstruction works at Nayarambalam family health centre and upgrade of Puthuvype primary health centre to a family health centre.
