Kochi: The high-power committee, constituted by the Kerala High Court, that was convened on Tuesday asked the minor irrigation department to resume the structural works of Mullassery Canal.
The officials said during the meeting that they will resume the work within two weeks. The meeting also asked the minor irrigation department to ensure that the works are not suspended citing monsoon rains.
If works are interrupted due to incessant rains, the authorities have been advised to take measures such as installing motor pumps to drain out rainwater.
The works of the canal were suspended in May this year citing monsoon rains. "The works were suspended anticipating heavy rainfall in the monsoon. But the city did not receive heavy rains as expected. Now the minor irrigation department has been directed not to suspend the works citing various reasons. There should be continuity in the works. Besides, police and health authorities of the Kochi corporation have been directed to intensify patrolling and other measures to prevent the dumping of waste in canals. A review on the steps taken in this regard will be conducted in the next meeting," said a source who attended the meeting.
The works of Mullassery Canal will be carried out from Karikkamuri Cross Road Junction to MG Road now. The rest of the works towards TD Road will be carried out after completing the works on the stretch till MG Road. An inspection of the canal will be held next week.
The high-powered committee comprising officials from various departments and stakeholders was constituted by the court to address the waterlogging issues in the city.
Besides, it has been decided to conduct an inspection at hotspots where floodwater enters, and to clean the drains before the arrival of the Northeast monsoon. A list of places where the cleaning will be carried out will be prepared.
