HC: Ensure no illegal sand mining along Vaigai riverbed
Madurai: The Madras high court has directed the Dindigul district administration to ensure that no illegal mining occurs along the Vaigai riverbed in Dindigul district.
The court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by P Kottaisamy, who sought protection for the Vaigai riverbed and action against illegal mining in Sithargal Natham and Vilampatti villages in Nilakottai taluk, Dindigul district.

A division bench of Justice G R Swaminathan and Justice B Pugalendhi observed that upon perusal of the materials on record, the court was satisfied that illicit and illegal quarrying had taken place.
Taking into account the submission of the authorities that sand mining has been completely stopped, the judges directed that no further mining activities shall take place in the area in the future. The petition was disposed of.
