Navi Mumbai: The Panvel City Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has terminated licenses of Amar Hospital, Kalamboli, over allegations of violations in conducting abortions.
PCMC has also requested the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC), which functions as a watchdog of the medical profession, to cancel the licence and registration of the hospital owner, Dr Arjun Pol, and plans to file a police complaint against him.
The development follows the death of a Pune woman who had undergone an abortion at the hospital.
The Pune woman, 25-year-old Samrin Nevarekar, died on July 8. Her paramour, along with his accomplice, threw Nevarekar’s body (who was four-month pregnant) and her two sons, aged 2 and 5, into the Indrayani river on July 9. Police have booked the doctor.
Probe revealed another woman, Sabrin Ajmal Khan (25), had died in the hospital on Feb 18, this year. PCMC formed an inquiry committee that found that her death was caused due to negligence. Similar incidents had occured in 2023 and 2021 The civic body had in March 2024, issued a notice to the hospital asking it not to admit any patient and only allowed OPD facilities. Panvel municipal commissioner Mangesh Chitale said, “Appropriate action has been taken and more will follow.”
Dr Anand Gosavi, medical officer, health, PCMC, said, “The hospital’s registration, under the Nursing Home Act-1949, the licenses issued under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act, 1994, and Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act-1971, has been revoked.” Hospital authorities didn’t reply to calls and messages.
