Ranchi: Since the introduction of Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) in 2018, over 18 lakh underprivileged individuals in Jharkhand have received free medical treatment under the scheme. The state has processed claims amounting to Rs 90,204 crore for these healthcare services.
The Ayushman Bharat programme provides coverage for various medical services, including general surgery, neurosurgery, respiratory care, cardiology, neonatal care, and general medicine.
Eligible families are entitled to a cover of Rs 5 lakh per year for treatment at empaneled hospitals, both public and private, regardless of family size, age, or gender.

As per the statistic from the health department, currently, 1,22,64,423 residents in Jharkhand have Ayushman cards, enabling them to avail the benefits of the scheme.
Over the past six years, 18,01,832 Ayushman cardholders, consisting of 9,26,877 women, 8,74,889 men, and 56 others, have utilised the services. In Ranchi alone, 2.69 lakh patients have received treatment under the programme.
Ranchi civil surgeon, Dr Prabhat Kumar said, “The scheme signifies a significant advancement in improving healthcare access, providing high-quality treatment to a broader range of patients. The progress in offering free treatment is a major milestone in making healthcare more accessible for those facing health challenges in the region.”

Mansi Kumari, a 30-year-old cancer patient, expressed her gratitude, saying, “Without this free treatment, we wouldn’t have been able to afford care. Although I’ve been battling breast cancer for a year, it was diagnosed three months ago, and my condition has improved somewhat since then after treatment at hospital.
Linguish Tirkey, brother of Ashwin Tirkey, a 21-year-old diagnosed with blood cancer said, “We are not financially stable. We are grateful that he is receiving care at the district hospital, which has started providing free services for people in our situation."
Pinky Devi, a rectal cancer patient, said, “Without Ayushman, I might not be alive today. Thankfully, I'm now receiving chemotherapy at Sadar Hospital, and my condition is improving.”
