Surat: The Gujarat Housing Board (GHB) has accelerated the process to vacate a housing scheme in Sachin area which is about 35 years old. The buildings had failed the structural stability test.
GHB has sought support from Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) to disconnect water and drainage to force the residents to vacate the houses. Despite multiple warnings and notices, the residents refused to budge.
The housing project has 171 buildings with 2,104 apartments.
Majority of the apartments are occupied and if the entire colony is vacated more than 8,000 people will be affected. The colony was not within the limits of SMC earlier. In 2020, after the merger of a few villages with the civic body, the colony became part of SMC.tnn
