Sunanda Sharma, a renowned vocalist of the Banaras Gharana, recently presented a concert titled ‘Boondan Phuhaar’ at the Stein Auditorium, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. Organised by the Girija Darshan Trust, the event explored the beauty of the monsoon season through Indian classical music.
The performance featured an ensemble of accomplished musicians: Pt.
Vinay Mishra on the harmonium, Pt. Mithilesh Kumar Jha on the tabla, and U. Ghulam Ali on the sarangi. Together, they created a musical experience that reflected the essence of the rainy season.
Speaking at the event, Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, remarked, “The Monsoon Music Fest Boondan Phuhaar was a celebration of Indian classical music. Varanasi, a city rich in history and culture, stands as a symbol of India’s artistic spirit. Girija ji’s contribution to preserving Banaras’s musical heritage is invaluable.”
Kusum Awasthi, Retired Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, added, “This event has been a rewarding journey. Sunanda, as my guru, is carrying forward this legacy with dedication.”
Sunanda Sharma, known for her deep-rooted training in the Guru-Shishya Parampara, shared her thoughts: “Music is a beautiful path of life, and celebrating nature through it is a blissful opportunity.”
The Girija Darshan Trust, founded by Sharma, is committed to preserving Indian classical music. It honours her Gurus, Smt. Girija Devi and Pt. Sudarshan Sharma, and aims to support young talent while providing a platform for established artists.
