Apple’s latest iPhone 16 models recently went on sale in India. The iPhone 16 series comes with multiple upgrades like a new 48MP Fusion main camera, a Camera control button and built-in Apple Intelligence support. However, the rumouˇrs about the iPhone 17 series which is expected to launch next year are already making rounds on the internet. A new report has revealed that the iPhone 17 models are expected to arrive with more display upgrades.
iPhone 17 display upgrades: What to expect
According to a report by MacRumors, Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) CEO Ross Young has revealed next year's iPhone 17 and a rumoured slimmer model, tentatively named "iPhone 17 Air," are both expected to feature ProMotion displays. This technology is expected to allow the screen's refresh rate to adjust dynamically, reaching up to 120Hz for smoother visuals and reducing to a lower rate when needed for power efficiency.
Currently, the standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus have 60Hz displays, while Pro models can ramp down to 1Hz, enabling an always-on display. It's uncertain if the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air will also support the 1Hz capability.
iPhone 17 may not feature under-display Face ID
Rumours of under-display Face ID on iPhones have been swirling for years, but it remains elusive. Earlier, Young claimed that the iPhone 17 Pro would finally bring this feature. However, the same source has now claimed that the under-display Face ID won’t be coming to the iPhone 17 models.
While under-display Face ID would eliminate the need for a notch or Dynamic Island, the front camera may still require a hole in the screen. This could lead to a design akin to current Android flagships, with a single, centered hole-punch cutout.
Young also hints at the possibility of both under-display Face ID and a completely hidden front camera in the iPhone 19 Pro, three years down the line. However, for now, the fate of the Dynamic Island in the iPhone 17 Pro remains unclear.
