Doctors at SCB perform 2nd living donor liver transplant
Bhubaneswar: A team of doctors conducted the second living donor liver transplant at SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, on Monday.
The liver was transplanted on to a 39-year-old patient from Nayagarh district, who was was undergoing treatment in the hospital for three months. His wife donated part of her liver for transplant.

The liver transplant was conducted under the leadership of Dr P Balachandran Menon.

Four doctors from AIG Hospital, Hyderabad, along with doctors from SCB MCH, performed the procedure at the special modular operation theatre, said a hospital official.
“After the transplant, the patient’s condition is stable. Apart from doctors, heads of departments of hepatology, haematology, radiology, transfusion medicine, anaesthesiology, and surgery helped in the procedure,” said Dr Rajesh Kumar Dora, nodal officer and head of liver transplant programme, SCBMCH.

He said a team of eight doctors took more than nine hours to complete the complex procedure. It started at 8 am and concluded at 6.30 pm. “Both donor and receiver will be under observation in our hospital,” he added.
SCB is the first govt hospital in Odisha to conduct a liver transplant. On April 3, doctors transplanted liver unto a 48-year-old male patient from Tigiria in Cuttack district. “We reviewed and analysed the condition of the first patient. After we found satisfactory results, we prepared for the second transplant,” said Dora.
An MoU has been signed between AIG Hospital, Hyderabad, and SCB MCH for liver transplant. A sum of Rs 22 crore was sanctioned for setting up of the unit.
A private hospital in Bhubaneswar, with the help of a Hyderabad-based hospital, performed the state’s first liver transplant on a 55-year-old teacher in March 2020.
