Rourkela: Jhirpani police arrested a man from Bhubaneswar on Friday night for allegedly scamming a resident of Rourkela of Rs 30 lakh under the guise of securing him a job. With police assistance, the victim was able to recover Rs 5 lakh from the accused.
The accused, Debasish Dash (31), was arrested from his residence in Bhubaneswar under Laxmisagar police station limits, while a second accused, Minaketan Biswal, is on the run.
Police sources said the victim, Satish Choudhury (59), is a resident of Koel Nagar, Rourkela. Choudhury, earlier employed as an engineer on a project in Jharkhand, had met Dash while working there. Dash had introduced Choudhury to Biswal, claiming that Biswal could help him secure a govt job. After expressing interest, Choudhury was asked to pay Rs 30 lakh for the job opportunity, which he transferred to Dash.
However, despite repeated follow-ups, the promised job never materialised. Over time, Choudhury managed to recover Rs 7 lakh from the duo.
In July, Choudhury’s wife lodged a l complaint with Jhirpani police. Following the complaint, police contacted Dash, who returned Rs 5 lakh more, but further attempts to recover the rest were unsuccessful. “We have arrested one accused in connection with this case, and efforts are on to track down the second accused, who is absconding,” said R Sahu, inspector in-charge of Jhirpani police station.
