Chandigarh: The engineering department of the municipal corporation, Chandigarh, has started preparing the feasibility report for the reconstruction of the multilevel parking project at Sector 8. The department will assess the area and send the report to the urban planning department of the UT for further action.
Since all three components – building work, public health services work and electric works – have to be covered in the feasibility report, multiple teams of the engineering department are on the job and will submit their reports after inspecting each portion of the area.
“Since the multilevel parking constructed earlier has remained shut for the last many years due to safety issues, the assessment of the area will be crucial in this entire exercise. We have deployed officials for preparing the ground report. Based on the feasibility report, the UT will take any further action,” said a source in the municipal corporation.
The urban planning department of the Chandigarh administration has already sent the drawings to the engineering and other departments concerned of the MC.
“This is the first underground parking of the city that has been allowed to be rebuilt. However, the existing structure, which was declared unsafe around five-six years ago, needs to be demolished,” said another source.
As per information, the reconstructed multilevel parking will be able to accommodate approximately 200 vehicles at one time.
Currently, due to lack of parking space, people are forced to park their vehicles on the slip roads and also on the backside of the commercial area.
Even as the civic body is facing a financial crunch, officials concerned are expecting the conditions to improve by the time the engineering department completes the feasibility test and related paper work. Moreover, this is an important project, the MC may request for a dedicated grant from the Chandigarh administration, said an official.
