TRICHY: A court in Trichy on Tuesday refused to remand Tamil film director Mohan G in judicial custody and released him on bail citing the improper way of his arrest by Samayapuram police.
Mohan was arrested earlier in the day for his remarks about suspected adulteration of Palani temple panchamirtham with tablets including contraceptive pills.
Magistrate KR Balaji of judicial magistrate court -III released him on bail after hearing the arguments of the prosecution and the defence lawyers.
Samayapuram police arrested the 39-year-old director from Chennai and brought him to Trichy in the evening. He was booked on charges of spreading falsehood with an intent to incite violence and disturb communal harmony. The case was registered based on a complaint filed by Kaviyarasu, a Hindu religious and charitable endowment (HR&CE) official in the Samayapuram Mariamman Temple.
Mohan was arrested for controversial remarks in an interview to a YouTube channel. In the interview, he said he had heard that a tablet causing impotency and contraceptive pills had been mixed with the panchamirtham of Palani temple.
His remarks drew the attention of the HR&CE officer when the controversy over the use of adulterated ghee in the Tirupati laddu triggered national level debate.
Mohan has directed four Tamil films -- Draupathi, Pazhaya Vannarapettai, Rudra Thandavam and Bakasuran.
