Dehradun: A total of 190 people have died during the Char Dham Yatra so far, primarily due to health issues, according to data shared by the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) on Saturday morning.
The most recent fatality was a 56-year-old man from Maharashtra who died on Saturday of a myocardial infarction on the way to Yamunotri, said the Uttarkashi district administration.
Three other pilgrims died on Friday due to pulmonary and cardiac complications exacerbated by underlying health conditions. Among them were a 37-year-old man from Gujarat, a 60-year-old man from Madhya Pradesh and a 56-year-old man from Tamil Nadu.
The secretary of health department Dr Rajesh Kumar, said, "This year, we have included deaths due to natural calamities in our total casualty list. Death audits have been completed for most cases, and as of today, 200 people have died: 102 in Kedarnath, 50 in Badrinath, 33 in Yamunotri, and 15 in Gangotri."
However, data collected from district administrative teams by TOI suggests at least 216 deaths including 102 in Kedarnath, 64 in Badrinath, and 50 in Yamunotri and Gangotri combined. Most of the deaths have been linked to pulmonary and cardiac issues.
Since the Yatra began in May, around 35 lakh pilgrims have visited the Himalayan shrines.
