Dehradun: The body of a newborn girl was found in the toilet of Government Doon Medical College and Hospital on Sunday, once again raising concerns about safety measures at the health facility.
Kotwali police station SHO Chandrabhan Adhikari said, "Since there are no CCTVs near the washroom, we are checking footage of cameras installed nearby. It is suspected that the accused was not a patient, but someone who came from outside."
Police said absence of evidence regarding hospital birth suggests that either the delivery and subsequent death occurred unexpectedly, or there was a deliberate attempt to dispose of the infant.
While a postmortem report is awaited, hospital authorities said all registered patients were accounted for. Medical superintendent Dr Anurag Agarwal said, "After examining records of patients, it has been determined that the child in question was not associated with any of the individuals under our care."
"The hospital administration has decided to implement enhanced security measures to prevent similar incidents in future," Dr Agarwal added.
Notably, in a similar incident in 2017, a newborn boy was found by a sanitation worker in the washroom of the labour room in the obstetrics and gynaecology wing of the hospital. Hospital officials had then claimed that the newborn was "not delivered at the facility but was brought by someone from outside and thrown in the washroom".
