Panaji:Cholera cases have resurfaced from the Mobor and Cutbona jetties in
South Goa, as the health department recorded 13 fresh cases on Monday, taking the total number of infections to 218. The majority of these new cases are from Mobor area.
State epidemiologist Dr Utkarsh Betodkar said that the new cases are among workers from previously unaffected fishing vessels.
“Seven patients have been admitted in two different private hospitals in Margao, four are in South Goa District Hospital while three are receiving treatment at primary health centre, Balli,” he said. Additionally, seven individuals are being treated at their residences.
Betodkar expects the number of cholera cases to decline within a week, adds that tey but may peak again. “There is high possibility that we may witness few peaks and then the infection will gradually die. We cannot declare that the outbreak is over unless cases remain zero for double the incubation period,” he said.
The state epidemiologist said that govt is actively monitoring the situation to curb the disease spread at the two affected jetties.
To address the issue, the authorities have set up 30 bio toilets at Cutbona.
The cholera outbreak has resulted in the deaths of five migrant workers. Two of these were brought dead to the hospital.
