Belagavi: Dr Nagalakshmi Choudhary, chairperson of Karnataka Women's Rights Commission, paid a surprise visit to BIMS hospital in Belagavi on Tuesday and conducted an inspection. She later said that she would gather information about the acute problems of the hospital and submit the report to the superiors to resolve the issues.
Speaking to media on the occasion, Choudhary said that she had checked the conditions of Belagavi district hospital and gathered information.
More than 1,500 outpatients are being examined in the district hospital daily, and there is a shortage of specialist doctors and staff. Measures need to be taken to overcome the shortage of doctors and staff. She would make every effort to facilitate the smooth management of the district hospital. She said she is committed to providing all kinds of cooperation to the hospital administration in this regard.
Increasing cases in Belagavi dist
Dr Nagalakshmi Choudhary said that the numbers enrolled in the district Nirbhaya unit as of now are 90 in the past 8 months. Some more cases may come to light. A meeting will be convened at the DC’s office on Wednesday to discuss them, she said.
“It has come to my attention that the devadasi system is still alive in the Belagavi district. I have already met the devadasis in Savadatti and have spoken to them. They need to be educated about the law, and efforts will be made to bring them into the mainstream by informing the department concerned,” she said. She said that she has instructed the teachers in Anganwadi schools in the district to emphasise quality education for children. tnn
