Kochi: Maradu municipality is gearing up to inaugurate a resource recovery facility (RRF) in early Oct. The facility, which was built spending Rs 40 lakh from the Kerala solid waste management project (KSWMP) funds, is anticipated to significantly mitigate the municipality's difficulties in waste segregation and treatment.
According to municipality chairman Antony Ashanparambil, Haritha Karma Sena (HKS) workers carry out tasks such as separating solid and biowaste and dusting the accumulated waste manually.
However, with the new facility, these processes will be mechanized. "Modern equipment like conveyor belts, sorting tables, weighing machines and de-dusters at the RRF will significantly reduce the challenges in waste management," said Ashanparambil.
Ashanparambil also said the municipality has reduced the biowaste generated from residential properties by providing biobins to users. However, waste dumped by individuals has been a challenge for health workers and HKS staff.
