Kochi: India meteorological department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for Kannur and Kasaragod on Wednesday. A heavy rainfall warning has been issued for Sept 28-30.
It said that under the influence of cyclonic circulation over central Bay of Bengal, a low-pressure area has formed over westcentral Bay of Bengal and the adjoining northwest Bay off the north Andhra-south Odisha coasts.
The associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6km above mean sea level, tilting southwestwards with height. A shear zone runs over north peninsular India between 3.1km to 7.6km above mean sea level, tilting southwards with height.
Thunderstorms with lightning accompanied by winds with speeds reaching 30-40kmph, gusting to 50kmph, are very likely at one or two places in Kerala on Wednesday and also on Saturday.
Squally weather with wind speeds reaching 35-45kmph, gusting to 55kmph, is likely along and off Kerala coast. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea.
Incois has issued a swell surge alert and ocean current alert for Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Kannur, Kasaragod, Kollam, Malappuram, Thiruvananthapuram, and Thrissur.
According to the 24-hour rainfall recorded on Tuesday morning, Muliyar received 7cm, while Hosdurg and Kudulu got 6cm. Taliparamba, Peringome, Panathur and Panniyoor got 5cm, while Bayar received 4cm of rainfall.
