Kolkata: Sensing that the road repair drive before
Durga Puja might get hampered by a spell of rain this week, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has intensified its repair drive and initiated a night-long process in some areas where roads need urgent attention. According to a KMC official, they might need to extend the drive by two days — from Sept 30 to Oct 2 — in the event of rain this week.
A KMC roads department official said the civic body was concentrating on repairing 132 stretches — a list of which was handed to KMC by cops at a meeting chaired by city mayor Firhad Hakim.
Sources in the KMC said the road repair team was at work in areas like Park Circus, MG Road, CR Avenue, SP Mukherjee Road, DH Road, Garden Reach Circular Road, Paharpur Road (Garden Reach), Biren Roy Road (West), Motilal Gupta Road, NSC Bose Road (Tollygunge) and Mahatma Gandhi Road (Tollygunge), among others. The KMC roads department has also identified some EM Bypass stretches that need urgent repair.
“We have taken up the special repair drive last week as rain played spoilsport with our earlier programme. We have been wrapping up the work on several stretches. But stretches under Kolkata Port Trust, HRBC, PWD or KMDA are battered. We have requested the central and state agencies to conduct repairs within their jurisdictions. We will cooperate with them to wrap up the drive by Oct 2,” said an official.
