Madurai: City police on Monday seized 24kg of ganja smuggled through a parcel purportedly containing wooden toys from Andhra Pradesh.
Police said the parcel was sent from Visakhapatnam through a private courier service addressed to ‘Vicky' in Simmakkal, Madurai. The parcel was labelled ‘wooden toys'. An employee from the parcel service located near SS Colony contacted Vicky via mobile phone to obtain the correct delivery address, but the man answering the call spoke in a suspicious manner.
Further, the excessive weight of the parcel aroused suspicion among staff members. So, they alerted police.
Police, in presence of a village administrative officer, opened the parcel and found 12 packets of ganja concealed in a wooden box covered with a white sack.
Consequently, police registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and are investigating.
