Dindigul: The Dindigul district administration has launched an investigation after an abnormal land fissure appeared on the ground recently near Kodaikanal.
The land fissure was first noticed by local residents several days ago at Kilavarai village near Kodaikanal, where the primary occupation is agriculture. It left a massive crack in the ground near a water channel there.
Subsequently, on Monday, a team of officials from the Dindigul district administration, various depts including revenue and geology, carried out a preliminary study of the land fissure that had developed in Kilavarai.
Speaking to reporters, officials said that the land fissure that had developed was 82m in length.
"The fissure has entirely only soil cover and the depth is around 5m. The study is being conducted so that we can know if the fissure will progress further so that it can possibly be arrested and if it has any impact on the flow of water," added an official.
Officials also reiterated that the fissure is likely to have developed around 3-4 weeks ago rather than a few days ago. "We will know more as further study is done. We will look at previous satellite images and other reports and compare the findings and then submit a detailed report in the next few days," added the official.
