HC confirms relief to man’s kin in bus accident case
Madurai: Madras high court has confirmed the compensation awarded by Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) to the family members of a man who died in an accident involving two buses in Madurai district.
The victim was travelling in a bus that was parked on a bridge in August 1998 when another bus of the transport corporation came from the opposite side and dashed against it, resulting in his death.

In 2006, the MACT held that the accident took place due to the rash and negligent driving of the driver of the transport corporation bus and awarded a compensation of Rs 3.33 lakh to the family of the deceased.
Challenging the order, the transport corporation filed the present civil miscellaneous appeal in which it submitted that the tribunal's finding on negligence is contrary to the evidence on record. Justice Sunder Mohan observed that an eyewitness had stated that the driver of the bus of the transport corporation came in the wrong direction and dashed against the bus in which the deceased was travelling. A case was also registered against the driver. Hence, the judge said the court is of the view that the award of compensation is reasonable, and dismissed the appeal.
