Meerut: A court in Bulandshahr has summoned actor-turned-MP
Kangana Ranaut to appear in court on Oct 25 over her remarks made during the farmer protests in 2021-22 after a complaint was filed against her alleging that her comments were offensive, particularly towards women, and intended to malign the image of farmers and the protest.
Ranaut, BJP's Mandi MP, was summoned following a complaint lodged by Gajendra Sharma, the general secretary (organisation) of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Kisan Shakti).
Gajendra Sharma, a resident of Bulandshahr, claimed that Ranaut's remarks were indecent and specifically targeted farmers and women. He told TOI, "She termed farmers as ‘Khalistani' and ‘Pakistani', which was an attempt to tarnish our image."
Sharma added, "Even after being elected as an MP, Ranaut continued to make derogatory comments. We believe such behaviour is unbecoming of a parliamentarian, and we urge the President and the Prime Minister to expel her from her post." He added that if the lower court did not deliver justice, they would pursue the matter in higher courts, including the Supreme Court.
Ranaut had described the protests as scenes of "violence, rape, and murder" and claimed that the agitation could lead to a "Bangladesh-type situation" in India. She alleged that "dead bodies were hanging, and rapes were taking place on women participating at the protest sites on the Ghazipur border." Following the backlash, BJP distanced itself from her remarks.
The controversy escalated when Ranaut faced a confrontation at Chandigarh airport. A CISF constable, Kulwinder Kaur, allegedly slapped her during a security check. A video later surfaced showing Kaur shouting, "My mother was part of the farmers' protest." The constable was charged with a violation and faced disciplinary action. Kaur defended her actions, saying she was upset by Ranaut's remarks about the protests.
