Mumbai: The cabinet on Monday approved a cultural policy for the state aimed at creating an identity for
Maharashtra as a strong cultural centre and to conserve its assets like historical sites. The policy also aims to attract investment in cultural infrastructure and heritage conservation.
A committee chaired by Cultural Affairs Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar was appointed in 2022 to review the State's Cultural Policy of 2010.
The working chairman of this committee was senior BJP leader Vinay Sahasrabuddhe. The policy will be reviewed every five years.
The policy stresses to ensure active participation of local communities and local artists in the formulation of cultural policies. It spans Marathi language and literature, dance, singing, folk art, conservation of forts, the bhakti movement in the state, theatre and films. It promotes research and development for the implementation of cultural policies, the use of modern technology for conservation and facilitation of skill development in the cultural sector.
Its recommendations include the inclusion of Marathi in the school syllabus for at least 4 years, the inclusion of music and dance as subjects in school and the establishment of a university for music.
