Mumbai: The Worli police on Monday arrested a diamond trader after he allegedly crashed a BMW into a labourer at the Coastal Road near Worli Doodh Dairy. The injured worker was rushed to hospital, where he was declared dead before admission.
Pintukumar Thakur, 36, who works as a welder for the Coastal Road project, lodged an FIR with the police. In his complaint, he stated that the deceased, Kashmir Misa Singh, used to work for the Coastal Road project as a wireman.
This was the first accident in which a man was killed on the Coastal Road.
Thakur told the police that the workers were at work, and at around 7 pm, Singh was standing on the northbound side of the road. He told the police that they heard a loud sound and rushed to the spot. They found a parked blue BMW by the roadside, and Singh was lying on the road. An ambulance was called and Singh was rushed to Bhatia Hospital, where he was declared dead before admission. The police arrived at the spot and took the BMW driver, Rahil Mehta, into custody.
Mehta, who runs a jewellery designing firm along with his father in South Mumbai, was arrested under sections 106 (1) (causing death by negligence) and 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and section 184 (driving dangerously) of the Motor Vehicle Act. Mehta was granted bail on Tuesday. Further probe is on.
